Tow dolly and a vintage car...but the steering wheel does not lock.
 
I have a really nice tow dolly with brakes and steering and I may want to tow a 65 mustang with a 5 speed manual, but the thing is the car does not have lockable steering.

I have read that some people have had the dolly mash into the car fenders but it's unclear if that is an issue with a steering dolly?

Any thoughts?

If the dolly instructions say to lock the steering in the straight ahead position , then there is a tool available, that fits between the wheel and the seat, to lock it in place.
The tool came with the wheel alignment equipment in the dealership where I worked and was to hold the steering wheel straight ahead while the toe-in was being set. I'll have a look at tool sites to see if I can locate a source and picture.:thumb:

I used to tow my 74 Stingray on our Demco Dolly. Never had a problem except for allt he strained necks as I drove through towns with a vintage Airstream 345 Turbo Diesel towing a Corvette.:thumb:

Well, they do say to lock the wheel. I was curious if since it was a steering model if it would not want to move the cars wheels like a standard model would. I cant really lock the wheel and I dont want to rig it or use an apparatus that may scratch the steering wheel or mar the seat...its kinda showy. I guess I can just put plates on the car trailer.

Are you towing the Mustang with the front or rear on the dolly? If front can that 5 speed be towed wheels down? I know the 5 speed is not original to a 65 Mustang, so what did it come out of?

I have not towed the mustang yet, we are going to make a 3 hour trip this weekend and I was pondering tryin the mustang on the dolly (front wheels on dolly) in place of the wifes car. As it is we will be in the brown 4 door car and not the hotrod.

I have a trailer for the mustang but I did not want to try and unhook the trailer and move it out of the way once the vectra is parked.

The 5 speed is a Tremec Z spec Cobra T5.

If you want to risk a beautiful car like that by using a dolly for which it's not really suitable, go ahead! Let us know how it works out for you.


Frankly, I wouldn't do it even if it did work! We tow my wife's Subaru or my Wrangler. Both those vehicles have picked up quite a few rock dings from travelling so close to the coach for that many miles. No way would I subject a show car to that type of abuse.

Better check with Tremec ! I enquired a few years ago about towing an SSR with Tremec. They said no way without disconnecting the driveshaft. I guess there are bearings that don't get proper lubrication.

Don't risk it, trailer tow it. I had one of the first 64-1/2 Mustangs. Kind of wish I kept it.

I agree check with Tremec if that trans is OK for towing. A full trailer would be easiest and for sure safe solution. That is what I do when I tow one of my hot rods behind the MH.

Although I recently put a driveshaft disconnect into my 52 GMC pickup so I can flat tow it. Took first trip last week and it worked good. Just the pain to get the driveshaft hooked back up, ended up having to get under and line up the splines to get the sliding collar to work. There is a "double wide" tooth so the yokes stay in phase. Not exactly the most convenient, but it does allow for flat-towing and no trailer storage hassles once at the detination.
