Weigh Station Stop or Not
 

What is the general rule of thumb on weigh stations on the Interstate. Are you required to stop or not?

Weigh stations are for commercial vehicles only! :thumb::D

There is at least one state that requires motorhomes to stop but doesn't enforce it.

This is the rule in Maryland from their web site FAQ.

"8. What vehicles must go through weigh stations in Maryland?
All vehicles with a gross vehicle weight or gross vehicle weight rating of greater than 10,000 pounds must stop at open weigh stations. Only vehicles that are operating in commerce will be subject to a safety inspection."

However RVers that have called the Maryland DOT have been told not to worry about it and no one will come after you if you drive on by.

Been Rv'ing since 1957 and have never stopped at a weigh station. They are only for commercial vehicles.

Based on the signage, I, too, stopped in Maryland. They made it clear that I was in the way and that I should get the heck out of the way!

Just do not confuse a weigh station from a Hazmat inspection (before some tunnels) or agricultural check point (several in Fl and Ca). By passing those will attract a good bit of attention by local authorities.

Commercial vehicles only. Even in MD, I'd continue unless pulled over and plead ignorance.

Florida AG checkpoints do not require RVers to stop. Don't know about CA ones however.

True for Florida AG unless you are pulling a horse / cattle trailer. Even if it is empty!

Why would I have to stop with my horse trailer? I am not commercial or for hire, and am making no money with it....

At the AG inspection stations not weigh stations.

I always stop at the AG stations with my horse trailer, and trust me they will come after you.

The flordia AG inspection states that all cargo vans and cargo trailers must stop.
