Charleston SC Area

Want to be in the Summerville/Charleston SC area for about 6 weeks. Anyone have a place they like here? We are at KOA right now but looking for a less expensive alternative that is more about a nature and less about frills we donít want or need. We do want water, sewer and power.

Going to James Island in 2 weeks. I'll let you know how it is when we get back. I've not been before.

Third vote for James Island State Park. Stayed there for 5 days last summer and could have stayed much longer.

Most sites are big and private. Well maintained park with great beach area as well.

Fourth vote for James Island County Park CG. Stayed there in Feb and was fantastic!

If you qualify for military campgrounds, check out Charleston AFB and Navy base ďshort stayĒ.

Good luck!

To the folks who have been to James Island. I've read that some roads are tight going into the park with low trees. Does anyone have recommendations on the best route in or is there nothing to really worry about?

We did not have a problem. There was one approach road that had a large tree hogging the edge of the road but we just moved over to the center and it was fine.
Great park you will love it and only a 15 min ride to the center of town.

Iím 12í7Ē height and 41í long and didnít have an issue. There are two routes and both seemed similar to me. I went way my Garmin RV GPS sent me but drove other route some suggested and didnít seem any better.

Based on what I had read I was very nervous and it looks intimidating, but the trees didnít hit my rig. For me toughest place was turning left from Central Park Rd onto Riverland Dr. There was a large live oak very close to road on right side immediately after turning onto Riverland and with all the traffic it was tight and scary, but in the end not a problem. Just take it slow. The other route had construction to deal with.

Once in the park there are no issues and itís wonderful. I assume your Mirada is not taller than my Phaeton?

Smaller if anything. I lust after those Phaetons!!! Thanks. Was just reading the reviews on rv park reviews and people were mentioning it.

On the James Island route, we are heading that way this weekend (coming in from 95 Southbound). My GPS is wanting to take I-26 into Charleston, then 17 and 30. It would appear that swinging around Charleston on I-526 to 17 to the campground, while a pinch longer, might be the better route to avoid some of the traffic and narrow streets that Charleston is known for. Any experiences anyone can share on this?
