While I am sure the MDT is nice for towing a heavy trailer, the Ford F450 is MORE than adequate pulling any of the Excel RVs. We get 10 mpg when towing @ 65-70 mph. Don't know what the MDT's cost, but probably more than the F450. </div></BLOCKQUOTE>

Sue,

I was interested in the 450 until I started hearing reports about the fuel mileage. How many miles do you have on yours and are you seeing the mileage increase with more miles on the truck?

Also is that manually calculated or by way of the electronic display?

Is'nt a F-450 a MDT? Tom </div></BLOCKQUOTE>

Ditto Tom - Medium-Duty Trucks, Classes 4 - 6, 14,001 to 26,000 GVW. An F-450 would be in the Class 4 category and is IMO the minimum TV for any Excel 35' and over.

Larry, we're waiting for you on the 'Dark Side'! https://irv2.infopop.cc/groupee_commo...on_biggrin.gif

Chief,

You are absolutely, perfectly, precisely correct!....'bout time! https://irv2.infopop.cc/images/laugh.gif

Gosh, Sir KnowItAll (rockintom) agreed with someone. https://irv2.infopop.cc/groupee_commo...on_biggrin.gif

Hoosier32, welcome to the group. You will find that Excel is one of the Top Of the Line Fifth wheels built today. Chief has it right. A F450, C4500, Etc is the smallest truck I would pull with. Since I went over to the Dark Side, HDT, I wouldn't consider a MDT. Mainly because of the cost for the truck. The HDT will also provide a better ride, last you forever, even over MDT.

This hoosier32, thanks for everone's help. i will let you know how things turn out. thanks again.

That is the thing that makes me want an HDT is that the cost is less than a new 450 and way less than an M2.

Our Lariat F-450 was about 52.5K fully loaded. We have 12K miles on it and it has increased gas mileage from 8mpg (towing 16,000# +) to 10mpg - traveling 65-70mph. Without towing we get 14-16 mpg on the highway. Didn't use computer; filled up and deducted miles. We did install 60gal. tank in lieu of stock tank.

Sir Godby,
Son, I've found your HDT -- 2005 Peterbilt 379EXHD

Oh Baby Oh Baby

So much for me saying the HDT is less than the 450. Sweet looking truck, but you will be pushing the wind in that thing. Did you read the sign in front

It's Not About Fame
It's Not About Fortune
It's About Who's Got the Baddest Ride

It is a bad ride, but will make you squeak paying for it.

That is probably the best mileage I have heard from a 450, they are a great looking truck. Now just more confusion for my small brain.

In most all cases, wouldn't gas mileage, and more importantly safety, be better at 60mph?

'Hoosier', I apologize for straying way off the intent of your topic https://irv2.infopop.cc/groupee_commo...n_rolleyes.gif My post on the HDT for Sir Godby was https://irv2.infopop.cc/images/jestera.gif -- Nice HDTs, suitable for retitling as RVs and using as a tow vehicle, are available for less than 40K.

hoosier32 08-06-2008 03:54 PM

Hey folks, this has to be the best forum I have ever had the priviledge to be introduced to. You guys and gals are the greatest. See you down the road. Hoosier 32.
