Honda CRV Radiator Fan cycling excessively??
I figure there are a lot of CRV owners out there so I thought I'd ask this question since mine is new to me - 2014 model
When you have the air conditioner ON does your radiator fan cycle off and on a lot. When sitting still my fan will come on for 5 to 10 seconds then shut off for maybe 30 seconds and then repeat continually. The air conditioner works great and the coolant temperature never gets above mid-scale on the gauge and is stable.
I'm air conditioner savy but I just haven't pulled out my gauges to see if the charge is correct in case the low or high side switches are kicking both the compressor and the fans on and off due to improper charge but based on the way it cools I think it is pretty close.
I drove several before I purchased this one and all of them seemed to do the same thing.
Is it pretty common out there? I'm in Florida so it's mid-90's when I'm seeing this.
Gonna break out the gauges tomorrow and take a look-see but if anybody is awake like me and has a comment let me know.
Not uncommon. Our Civic did that too if not set up just right. I wonder if someone added coolant at some point. Warm weather raises the pressures and may cause the compressor to kick on and off taking the fan along for the ride. Look at the compressor clutch and see if it is cycling. If so get the AC manifold gauges out and check high and low side running and not. If the low side pressure goes over 35 on a warm day you may be overfilled. Find the specs for that compressor and see what pressure, corrected for temperature, you should have. Then ponder why that happened. The previous owner could have added coolant due to a leak.

My 08 CRV did the same thing.
I think you answered your own question.
"I drove several before I purchased this one and all of them seemed to do the same thing."
Our 07 CRV did the same.
Mystery Solved!! The constant cycling A/C compressor and fans on Honda CRV's
Well the mystery is now solved regarding why the A/C compressor and radiator fans constantly cycle on CRV's! :D
I checked the operating pressures and they were appropriate for an R134A system under our current ambient temps and humidity so it had to be something else. After checking the filter for debris and confirming good airflow it had to be something electronic and low and behold.......................
It's the ECONOMY mode! Duh.......
When you have the green Econ button active it cycles the compressor as one of the items it does to save gas (shift point changes and cruise control sensitivity are others). The fans are active anytime the compressor is running to lower the high side pressure (cools the condenser coil) so they cycle with the compressor.
What is somewhat silly is that the Economy mode may save you a few gallons of gas but I will guarantee that the constant cycling of the compressor will cost you a whole lot more when you have to replace at a minimum the compressor clutch or worse yet the complete compressor. :nonono:
I suppose the Economy mode was maybe a good idea, but bad execution if you ask me (unless of course you are the mfg. and make money on parts and repairs!)
It shall remain forever OFF on mine. Problem solved.
