Hurricane furnace question
 
I want to Thank everyone for their patience as Itry to get a handle on this new to me unit.... Im in St. Louis and winter will be here soon enough. I studied up on winterization steps yesterday as well as everything else in the book.... I read that the hurricane furnace and I am sorry to say I am drawing a blank this morning bt has water in or through it.... is that engine coolant or do I need to drain it somehow for winter???

I am embarrassed to be asking soooo many question but that it why I joined the site, to learn.

It is Basically an extension of your coaches engine coolant system. So no you do not need to winterize the Hurricane system.

I'm not so sure that a Hurricane is that much different from an Aqua-Hot or Hyro-Hot that you can afford to ignore it during the winterizing process.
I believe every hydronic heating system is a heat exchanger: a closed loop of boiler fluid (much like antifreeze) is heated and that set of coils transfers heat to the fresh water system, hot side. If you don't blow out or add antifreeze to the fresh water side of the hydronic system it could freeze and split and cost you a bundle.

I've read where simply blowing out the cold and hot sides of the water system works fine, and some swear by it. I've also read where compressed air alone is not enough to remove all the water.

I winterized for the first time, last year, by adding RV antifreeze to the system and opening both hot and cold sides (all faucets, the shower, and the icemaker) until it went pink. We only got into the teens in Oklahoma last year, but I had zero problems.

Someone please straighten me out if I got that wrong!

Steve, the Hurricane in the OPs coach only heats the coach and has nothing to do with the fresh water system. Post #2 explained the system.


CC did not use a Hurricane that heated fresh water until sometime in the mid '03 era. They then branched out into using the Aqua Hot and the Hydro Hot systems and dropped the Hurricane

Not exactly true. My Hurricane runs through my hot water heater and heats it up, as does the engine when driving, so we have nice hot water in route no propane needed. :cool:

But it does not effect winterizing . Fresh water needs to be drained including the hot water heater, but the Hurricane, Acuahot, etc. is really part of the engine cooling system, and as such needs antifreeze, but that should already be there.

Winterize your coach as you normally would. The Hurricane has it's own closed loop that uses antifreeze. If you have the "endless" hot water option, you will still need to drain the hot water heater, but again, the Hurricane loop is separated from all other systems and uses heat exchangers which are sealed. No need to drain the Hurricane itself.

If you don't have a place close by that can service the unit, I strongly suggest you learn how to do the annual maintenance so keep the system running problem free. You'll need to remove the burner until and clean the nozzle and combustion chamber annually or you'll experience misfires as a deposit builds up in the tip of the nozzle resulting in poor fuel atomization. It's also recommended you carry a service kit that contains a spare nozzle and o-ring, fuel filter, igniter, and flame sensor. The kit is kinda pricey at about $300, but it will allow you to do field repairs covering the most common failures. I rate the difficulty level as being about the same as doing a tuneup on a car. Just very basic tools are required and it takes me about an hour.

If you depend on the Hurricane to heat 10 gallons of water for a shower, you will have a long wait. The feature of the water being heated by engine coolant is known as "motor-aid"

Agreed, I have never attempted a shower, but it is handy for washing your hands, and dishes when travailing.

If it's pretty chilly out at night and my Hurricane is running a lot at night the hot water in the Atwood WH (with gas and electric off) is hot enough to burn me in the morning when I take a shower. I can take a good 5 minute shower and have plenty of hot water left. It's certainly not as hot as when the electric or gas are running on the Atwood but it's plenty hot!

I have a 2003 Intrigue, Cummins ISL. As you stated, on my unit it does not heat the hot water nor the engine block as a preheater. All mine does is provide heat for the coach.

There is a "Y" check valve along the driver side rail that does divert coolant into the block for some heat. Best part is that you can heat the coach driving down the road by turning on the thermostat,the heat registers, and fans to make the coach nice and toasty driving down the road. Te burner will not come on because the coolant is heated via the motor
