Strange ticking sound??

W22 with 39k mikes. Runs awesome and everything works but I get a very erratic slight ticking sound up front. Comes and goes and no rhythm to the ticking. Could it be the “hood” which could be snug down more? A vacuum leak? Weird and baffled!

Well, if it was a grandfather clock and was only ticking...
You could look at it very sternly and say ' We have ways to make you tock'

Just funning you.
What model of coach?
Ours comes up with some strange sounds too.

CT Coachworks Siena...love the coach but strange noises while driving drive me mad...thinking the “hood” might be too loose.

Is this a gas or diesel engine? Does the ticking change with engine rpm? Does the ticking go away when the hood is up. There's a whole bunch of things this could be but we would need more information.

I'm betting it's an exhaust manifold leak. As asked, does the ticking speed vary with engine rpm? Does the ticking quiet down when the engine gets up to temperature?

I agree with Mudfrog.

I've had three bouts with exhaust manifolds on my 8.1 and they will make some very strange weird noises.

I suggest using your phone to record a short video with the engine shroud off and move from front to back and left/right. Do this at idle and with the rpm's higher like 2000. A trained ear will give you a pretty good guess. If it only occurs while driving under a load, have someone record for you when you get the ticking sound to appear.

Then upload the video and give us a link so we can watch it.

Good luck,
Bill

Had a ticking on my 05 Dolphin on a W22 , turned out to be a plug wire arcing to the manifold .

I found the source of the ticking! Really embarrassed as to the source. Seems I had this issue a couple of years ago and just remembered.
I have a custom made aluminum adjustable TV bracket up front for my 43” tv. I have to adjust the tilt which seems to eliminate the sporadic ticking.
I guess that’s better than some alternatives!

Thanks for the update, glad you found the source!
