Ground clearance "A" vs "C"
 
Is it true that a C has considerably more front ground clearance than an A?

I don't think anyone can make a blanket statement like that. There are so many manufacturers making their own Class A bodies where some may be lower than others. All new Class C's are on a Ford chassis, which makes the front end height pretty standard. There may be some with spoilers though.

Soooo.....with all that said, you would have to compare each coach to see if there is a difference.

Iíve owned both a Class A gas, and a Class C gas.
Both are Ford chassis units, but different. F53 vs E450.
I also drove school buses for years.
Front end clearance is nothing I was ever concerned about.


It seems to be a rather strange question.
Rear clearance questions always depend on how much overhang past the rear axle, along with tire size.
Ever seen a school bus bottom out? Nope.

One of the reasons I wanted my specific model was that it had slightly more ground clearance than the similar floor plan Winnebago or Forest River models.

The tires are 32Ē tall, with the body around the middle thatís 12-15 inches of clearance. (Not my pic, same model)

If the front axle will not clear an obstruction nothing else matters. Class A normally has taller tires than a Class C. Now if you're concerned about entry angle, bumper to front axle determines that as much as bumper height.

The hazard with (most? and assume A or C?) is the rear overhang clearance, that "disappears" at driveways/ entrances/ potholes and become DRAG points? Can affect bumper/ Gen/ Gen Muffler/ Hitch/ hitch ball/ pot holes?

On mine the situation is just like the photo in Matt A's post, the levelers are the closest thing to the ground.

There are compartments on the side depending on the model. We had to check every side door when the letter came out from DHS and DOT about bombs in those compartments in 2013

My 2004 Southwind had a high ground clearance on the Ford chassis.
My 2020 Horizon has a nice ground clearance on the Freightliner Custom Chassis.

All my gassers have had much better ground clearance then my 15 Freightliner chassis. Much better but I would still rather have diesels amenities.

Maybe some more info on your specific concern could help.

Oddly I can drive my Rig the entire way across the country no problem but the last 250 feet up to my house is a nightmare!! I literally have to rope the mud flap up. Run into the grass so I hit the driveway partially up the hill so the front doesn't bottom out as I back up. Dont even think about pulling straight up!!

This type of info might help us help you.
