I have access to a 240/50AMP outlet. I'm concerned that it might cause problems with my Dutch Star since it's rated for 120/50AMP. Any electricians that might advise me if this would cause problems?
50 amp RV is easy to identify:
Two outer straights are the HOTS.
Center straight is NEUTRAL.
Center round is GROUND.
So, from outer straight to outer straight= 240 VAC
Either outer straight to either center= 120 VAC
Center round to center straight= 0 VAC
Suspect you will find that in the 50 amp you are considering as well.
30 amp-- THERE there ARE differences between 120 and 240 VAC outlets.
Look at your plug, on the power cird and read the tiny print.
It will say 50 amp, 120/240 volt. An industry standard plug.
If it fits the outlet you found, its good to go
Never seen a 50 amp 120 volt plug on an RV.
Your coach needs a 120/240V 50A circuit. The NEMA 14-50R receptacle is 3-pole, 4-wire, and grounded, as described above, and looks like the picture. It is rated 125/250V, and is exactly what is used for most electric ranges.
If the existing receptacle has two parallel slots and a round hole, it is 240V only (NEMA 6-50, assuming itís 240V). Do NOT attempt to plug into that, though your shore power cord wonít fit. Call a sparky if itís wrong. There are also obsolete range receptacles that are 3-pole, 3-wire, ungrounded style, which while being 120/240V, is also NOT what you need or want. Again, call a sparky.
I guess I'm OK, I read 120v on the two parallel slots, and 240 both together. Just a case of the dumbs I guess. I don't understand elec.
There was someone here some months ago who somehow plugged his 30 or 50A coach into a 240V (only) receptacle, which has no neutral, and came here to ask why his stuff didn’t work. I never did hear how he did that exactly, since his shore cord plug wouldn’t fit, or what was fried when he did get it connected, but it would have been a lot. So better to ask first if unsure.

Oh, and many folks use shore power surge protectors or under/over volt and miswiring protection devices (EMS) at the pedestal, while will also show if the power is correct. They plug them in and test before connecting the coach. Just one example.
