2000 Discovery, LP generator not turning on.

This is a new to my dad RV. The LP tank is full, fridge and stove are running fine off the LP tank. When we try to start the generator from inside, we hold the switch to crank it and it just cranks for about 10 seconds until it finally gets cut off automatically. Is there any common issues to look for or are we doing something wrong?

Not sure about your LP Generator...I like most have a diesel (or gas) generator. First what is the manufacturer and model? Any Error Codes? Our Onan 7800 watt operates as thus. To start you must push DOWN on the start switch to PRIME the system. The light within the switch flashes rapidly. You should hear the pump running too. Do this for a few seconds Next push the same switch UP and I count 13 seconds and if the generator has not started in months, after a count of 13 seconds, it fires up.

If the fuel system is empty or lots of air it will take several attempts to get it running. BUT don't just keep cranking! You will ruin the starter, wiring, etc. After cranking, wait 5 minutes so the starter can cool down.

Keep us posted!

I'm pretty sure your generator is a liquid propane generator. It pumps liquid propane into the generator where it is vaporized into a gas to run the unit.

Have you tried to start the generator from the switch that is under the 'hood' on the passenger side of the generator? The switch is labeled "start" "stop"

When I had the liquid propane generator I found two problems that kept mine from starting. First was the device they use to converts liquid propane to vapor clogs up with propane oil. I had to remove the generator to get to the part, cleaned it and the generator ran after then.

The second starting problem I had was electrical in nature. The main circuit board went bad, and I replaced it.

Here is a copy of the generator troubleshooting guide I had for mine. I have part of a repair manual, so if we can narrow down the likely problem area, maybe I would have the page you need.

It ended up being the emergency cut off switch. The two wires that hook up to the back with spade connectors were completely disintegrated. Spliced the wires together temporarily and it fired right up. Thank God it was a simple fix.

Congratulations on a simple fix!
