Hwy 160 Southern CO?
 
Looking to travel on Hwy 160 from the SW CO (4 corners) up towards Colorado Springs in a gas RV (F53) with toad. RV Trip wizard shows elevation and grade as about 6000ft climb with grade <= 2* over 400+ miles. Haven't driven our RV in similar conditions and wondering how that stretch is?

When leaving Pagosa Springs on 160 you'll begin ascending Wolf Creek Pass. It's a beautiful drive and it's a popular RV route but yes, it's steep. We've done it a few times with our 40' motorhome towing the Jeep.

Pagosa Springs is 7126' elevation. The top of the pass is 10,850' elevation.

From the 'Mountain Directory for Truckers and RVers' (highly recommended): Eastbound descent 6% for 8 miles. Most of this is three lane road. Farther down it alternates between two and three lanes. The 6% begins with 30 mph curves. About 2 miles down from the summit there is a short tunnel with a curve. The grade continues as promised for about 8 miles at 6% from the summit but there are about 2 more miles of 5% before the grade eases enough to call it the end of the pass."

Get into low gear before heading down and only use your brakes by tapping on them. Don't keep your foot on the brake.

Plan a stop in Pagosa Springs and soak in the immaculate concrete hot springs of varying temperatures overlooking the river and town. We pack a cooler and spend a few hours there just relaxing and people-watching.

Great route. Get the song "Wolf Creek Pass"! I was lucky to be raised in that part of the country back in the good old days when it was a 2 lane highway.

You'll have Wolf Creek Pass (11,800') and North La Veta Pass (9,400') to surmount. We did that route in March 2020 in our Open Road (also F53) and pulling our toad. Both ascents are very doable, just take your time. It won't be a fast climb, but your rig is fully capable. On the downhills, especially down from the summit on Wolf Creek, you'll need to have your speed dialed down from the get go, using tow/haul to get you to a lower gear. It's a long 5%/6% descent. If you let your speed climb, you'll have to hit your brakes hard to get it back down. Better to have it under control from the start. North La Veta Pass will be similar, but not quite as rigorous as Wolf Creek.

Also, I suggest you get a copy of the Mountain West Directory so you can have details of these passes at your fingertips. RVTW is a great planning tool, but the Directory is what you want for the details. Safe travels.
