I don't know of an easy way to test the valve, but I replaced mine last Friday. It cost $4.20 from Ace Hardware. Mine was the screw in type, 1 1/2 inch. Took me about 45 seconds to change out.

We bought ours new, it had 1300 miles on it from delivery. Now has 49,500. We were putting about 9000 miles a years the first 3 years. Now we're down to 1500 to 3000 a year due to my health issues....

I had a similar problem on my 2003's tach. It was a grounding problem on the tach. Ran a new separate ground wire. That fixed my issue.
