This is a cheap fix. The braided extensions get damaged from the sharp edges of the rim. Just insert a rubber grommet over the sharp edges of the rim. It's not that noticeable, but does the trick.

Thanks for the input. Looks like I will put away the rubber mallet and take it to a glass shop. Sounds like this is the safest bet. Might as well get a good seal to limit the wind noise.
