Negative, the newer pumps have a different style plug which is why you need the updated pigtail. The new pump would include the updated pigtail in most cases.

Sounds plausible that this could be pre-ignition that you are hearing. That could also explain the overheating as pre-ignition is indicative of a lean condition which generates a lot of heat.

No heat shield on the passenger side other than the starter heat shield. Verify sensor is at correct torque value, 15 lb ft.
