You can install an Allison 1000 transmission as I did but, you will also need to change the axle ratio. The 542 is not a bad transmission, the drawback is a non lockup torque converter.

The air dryer on our motorhome is located R/H side aft of the back wheel on the out side of the chassis rail. I would expect you to have two air gauges as well, primary and secondary.
