Mobility Scooter

I am approaching the time that I need to purchase a mobility scooter since my walking mobility is becoming impaired by a hip and knee issue.

I was wondering if anyone has any experience with a light weight scooter that comes apart. I would use it while RVing and and other traveling. Would like to use it around the campground and accessible trails while traveling.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

My wife has a Golden Buzzaround XL. It breaks down into 4 major components plus the front basket. The heaviest piece is about 40 lbs. If you can easily lift that weight from the ground to waist height, it is not difficult to load onto a flat surface like the back of an SUV. It would take more effort to load into a car trunk with the added lip height and need to lower each piece into the trunk.

The scooter has a "suspension" that makes it fairly comfortable over groomed trails, a max speed of around 4 mph and a range of at least 10 miles. Ground clearance is about 3.5 inches and it handles speed bumps without getting hung up. It is a 4 wheeled scooter and very stable. We haven't run out of battery power yet, but our normal pace is more like 2-3 MPH so the range is further.

Lin has been very happy with the scooter. With her RA, walking significant distances is no longer an option. Based on our experience and talking with others, stick with a 4 wheeled scooter. They are more stable than the 3 wheeled versions. There are scooters that have more "off road" capability, but our days of hiking in the mountains are now a thing of the past.

Hope the info helps.

My wife uses a three wheel Pride GoGo Elite. It breaks down into easily lifted components. The heaviest piece may be 25 pounds.

On the trail it is not very stable and it does not go at all in sand or mud. Trail must be level left to right or roll over happens. Climbing steep hills require assistance. Roots and rocks are a no go.

It works great on hard level surfaces. Level left to right gravel surfaces or hard packed soil are fine. Even grass is OK but takes a lot of battery power.

My scooter is a MotoTec Folding Mobility Electric Trike. It folds up so small and is very easy to put in the back of our vehicles. It uses a nice lithium battery with lots of power. The disadvantage is that it is a trike and can go so fast you could tip it going around a corner if you aren’t careful. I end up just feathering the throttle, and it works fine. The first one we received had a bad wheel/motor, but they sent us a new one. It was easier for Kevin to replace the part rather than send it back and have them do it.

I have a 4 wheeler from pride mobility. It's a bit more stable than the 3 wheelers. Check there different scooters.

I got 2.. one that is not portable.. you need a cart or attachment to trailer hitch.. terrible choice. You need a 4,000 dollars lift . then got one online store.. that comes apart.. it's 4wh.. and so great.. it fits in daughters car trunk.. so in case she needs to take me.. fits all rv.. I got 4wh with extended range battery.. the heaviest part at around 25 pounds.. the rest just snaps together.. I got one with srings on each wheel.. the ride is great.. never one problem.. I don't like to use brand name.. so go to your favorite online store and search.. I recommend one with springs on all 4 wheels.. because you could be in it a long time.. and everywhere has uneven pavement.. even the smallest bumps.. can bounce thru your spine..
Good luck and keep us posted
